AOA to construct Olympic Bhawan in Guwahati
Online Staff/GUWAHATI, Nov 21: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Assam Olympic Association should be in look out for discovering more sports talents in Assam even from far flung areas and should lend hands to hone their sporting talents and make the state a potential name in the arena of sports.
Speaking at the annual general meeting of Assam Olympic Association to which he is also the president at Deshbhakta Tarunram Phukan Indoor Stadium here today, Chief Minister Sonowal said that Assam has the population of 3.5 crore and Assam Olympic Association should be on its toes to discover sporting talents to take Assam to the zenith of its sporting excellence.
He also said that an Olympic Bhawan to be set up in Guwahati which will be an integrated building accommodating all other State Sports Association office’s under its roof. The construction will begin immediately once the plot is allotted.
Meanwhile the AOA is planning to arrange air tickets for the State contingent which will participate in the next National Games scheduled to be held in Goa. The secretary of the AOA Lakhya Konwar informed the meeting that the AOA has planned to send the athletes by air to give them relief from long journey.
He added:”Grassroot Olympic will begin across the state from January next year. Football and athletics will be the part of this events and government has already sanctioned necessary funds for it. The idea behind to organize this meet is to take sports to the grass root level.
The meeting also gave provisionary affiliation to four State Sports Association- Assam Traditional Sports and Dragon Boat Racing Association, ITF Tang Soo Do Sport Association of Assam, Assam yoga Association and Assam Bodybuilders and Fitness Association
Apart from sonowal and Konwar today's meeting was also attended by Vice President and Minister for Guwahati Development Department Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Vice President and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Pijush Hazarika, Vice President and Member of Rajya Sabha Bhubaneswar Kalita, Vice President Ritubaran Sarma, Treasurer Tapan Kumar Das and Sports Commissioner of Assam Moloy Bora.
