‘Guwahati capable to host Jr WC’

Online Staff/GUWAHATI, Aug 27: The president of the International Hockey Federation Narinder Dhruv Batra said that Guwahati is capable to host next edition of the World Junior Hockey which is scheduled to be held in November-December this year. The International Hockey Federation allotted the event to India and Guwahati is one of the contenders to host the championship.
Batra, who is also the president of Indian Olympic Association, arrived this morning in the city in connection with World Junior Hockey championship. He later met with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the matter related to this competition. The veteran sports organizer also participated in two meetings organized by Assam Hockey and Assam Olympic Association respectively.
Talking to the media at the side line of a meeting organized by Hockey Assam, Batra today said that Guwahati is very much capable to host the Junior World Hockey Championship. He told, “The infrastructure requires for the tournament is already available in the city. They even earlier successfully hosted South Asian Games too. So I don’t see any problem.”
The president and the secretary of Assam Hockey Keshab Mahanta and Tapan Das along with several other officials of the association were present in the meeting.
Batra today also lauded Lovlina Borgohain’s medal winning performance in Tokyo Olympics. The IOA president said, “She fought really well in the Olympics and brought a medal for us. I hope this medal will inspire many youths from Assam as well as other part of the Northeast.”
Batra also added: “Now the sports organizers from Assam should work with specific plans so that they can double their medal tally in next Olympics.”
