Stuart Binny to join Assam team
Online Staff/ GUWAHATI, Sept 10: The Assam Cricket Association appointed former member of Team India Stuart Binny as the assistant coach for the senior state team. Ajay Ratra, another former international, will continue as the head coach of the team.
The domestic season will kick off on November 4 with the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Cricket and it will be followed by Vijay Hazare Cricket tournament and Ranji Trophy. Both the coaches will stay with the team in all three formats.
Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association, announced the names of coaches and support staff for different State teams in a media briefing here today. Ratra, who was the head coach of the senior team last season, will stay with the team this season also. On the other hand Stuart Binny would join the side as assistant coach with Salil Sinha. Salil was the deputy of Ratra in the previous season also.
Saikia also said, “We have appointed Tribenee Bhattacharyya, a mental strengthening coach, for our senior and U-19 women cricket teams. If requires we will take the service of similar coaches for our men’s team also in future.”
Meanwhile Assam Cricket Association is all set to host three BCCI tournaments this season. Syed Mushtaq Ali Cricket tournament (November 4-9) would be the first one. The other two competitions are: U-25 (Men) cricket and Senior Women T20 Cricket. The U-25 meet will be held on Nov 17-26 and the Senior Women T20 Championship in February.
“We have prepared four grounds for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Cricket championship and these are ACA Stadium, Barsapara, Nehru Stadium, Judges Field and NFRSA Stadium. The ongoing renovation work at the Nehru stadium will be completed very soon. We are going to test the behavior of the newly laid pitches from tomorrow through a couple of practice matches,” added Saikia.
Meanwhile to give match practice to the state cricketers Assam Cricket Association is introducing Assam T20 Challenge Cup from September 18. Six teams will participate in the championship in double leg format. The top four teams in the group stage will move into the semi finals. Former cricketer Naba Konwar is appointed as the observer of the meet.
Saikia said, “The cricket activities in the state are closed since April due to COVID-19 pandemic. This competition will give our players much needed match practice and will also serve as selection trial for the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazre Cricket Championship.”
He also announced that the 2nd Annual Awards Function of the Assam Cricket Association will be held at the Auditorium Hall of the Gauhati Town Club on September 15. The trophies, logo and jersey of the Assam T20 Challenge trophy will also be unveiled in the same function.
Apart from Saikia the media briefing was attended by the treasurer and vice president of the Assam Cricket Association Tridib Konwar and Porikshit Dutta respectively.
