Dinesh Saikia Basketball meet from Friday

Online Staff/GUWAHATI, June 21: The preparation for the forthcoming 3rd Dinesh Saikia U-16 Youth Basketball Championship is going on full swing in the city. The meet will kick off at the RG Baruah Sports complex on Friday and Assam Sports Minister Naba Kumar Doley will attend the inaugural function as a chief guest.
This year altogether 22 teams from different parts of the state will participate in the meet and it will be held in both boys and girls categories. State team for the forthcoming National Youth Championship will be selected from this competition.
Addressing the media at Gauhati Press Club the Chairman of the organizing committee Jadav Deka said, ‘We decided to host this meet on the name of Dinesh Saikia, the former national basketball player, who made a huge contribution to take forward the game in the state. We also planned to make an appeal to the state government for financial assistance to the family members of Saikia who expired recently.”
Deka also added: “The organizing committee is trying to arrange the forthcoming Inter District meet in the best possible way. Apart from providing all necessary facilities to the players we have made some special arrangement for the closing function which included a spectacular fire cracker display from Barpeta.”
Meanwhile as a part of the development programme Basketball Association of Assam will organize a special coaching camp for its players. Players from all age group would be invited in the camp which will be held in Guwahati next month.
Disclosing the news the secretary of the Basketball Association of Assam Mukut Medhi said, “We have talent in this game but the number of coaches are very limited in our state. So we have decided to invite Prasanna, a national level coach, to train our boys and girls in a specially designed coaching camp. The camp will be held at the R G Baruah Sports complex.”
The media briefing was also attended by the president of the Basketball Association of Assam Pulak Goswami.
